ST. BERNARD - Roger Bacon Athletics is proud to announce longtime Roger Bacon coach Dick Arszman ’59 as the recipient of the 2026 Caryl Schawe Award.
The Caryl Schawe Award is named after legendary Roger Bacon volleyball coach Caryl Schawe and recognizes an individual who exemplifies an exceptional work ethic, self-motivation, the ability to build a positive culture, and active involvement in the school community.
Since returning to Roger Bacon as a coach in 1985, Arszman has exemplified each of those qualities through nearly four decades of service to Spartan Athletics.
Arszman joined the Roger Bacon Boys Soccer and Softball coaching staffs as an assistant in 1985. He has coached soccer every season since returning to RB and remained a member of the softball staff through 2013. In 1987, Arszman was named Head Coach of Roger Bacon Boys Soccer.
As the head coach of Roger Bacon Boys Soccer from 1987 until his “retirement” in 2013, Arszman led the Spartans to two Ohio state championships. His retirement from coaching, however, lasted less than a season. The following year, Arszman joined the Roger Bacon Girls Soccer staff as an assistant coach, a position he continues to hold today. The 2026 season marks his 39th season coaching at Roger Bacon.
Arszman’s connection to Roger Bacon soccer also extends to his family. His son, Jason Arszman ’89, played for Arszman and also coached the Roger Bacon Girls Soccer team in the early 2000s. Jason would earn First Team All-GCL and All-Cincinnati Soccer honors twice and go on to play soccer for the University of Cincinnati.
Soccer is not the only sport in which Arszman has made his mark at Roger Bacon. After serving as an assistant coach for the Roger Bacon Softball team in 1985 and 1986, Arszman became the program’s head coach in 1987. He remained in that role through the early 2000s before stepping down as head coach and continuing as an assistant on the softball staff through 2013.
In 1999, Dick was inducted into the Roger Bacon Hall of Fame. In 2015, his son Jason was inducted into the Roger Bacon Hall of Fame.
Through his decades of coaching, mentorship and involvement across Roger Bacon Athletics, Arszman has left an impact on generations of Spartan student-athletes. His commitment to Roger Bacon’s girls athletic programs has allowed him to coach, mentor and support thousands of female student-athletes throughout his career, leaving a lasting impact on the young women who have come through the Spartan athletic program.
